A wedding in Val d’Orcia at one of our favorite places in Tuscany

Some venues become familiar because you work there often. Others become part of the way you understand weddings. Il Rigo, near Pienza and San Quirico d’Orcia, is one of those places for us.

We return there many times every summer to photograph couples coming from abroad to get married in the heart of Val d’Orcia. And every time, we find the same reasons to love it: the honesty of the atmosphere, the respect for the land, the quality of the food, the beauty of the flowers, the children exploring the garden and the hills, and a landscape that seems to stretch forever. On its official site, Il Rigo describes itself as an organic farmhouse set within one of the softest and most iconic panoramas in Tuscany, with views across Val d’Orcia toward Pienza and Radicofani.

As a wedding photographer in Val d’Orcia and a wedding photographer in Tuscany, working in a place like this means telling stories that return to what matters most: relationships, atmosphere, nature, and real beauty.

Il Rigo: an organic farmhouse for intimate weddings

The official Il Rigo website says a great deal about its identity. It is a family-run organic farm with hospitality, an agricultural restaurant, and weddings designed to be “small, relaxed and homemade.” It hosts weddings from 25 to 50 guests, with 17 rooms across two nearby farmhouses and a very personal approach to each celebration.

That intimate scale is exactly what makes Il Rigo so special. Weddings here never become anonymous events. They remain real days, where there is time to speak with everyone, to stay present, and to experience each detail without rush. For photographers, this changes everything, because it allows us to observe emotions and relationships in a much deeper way.

Food, flowers, and sustainability all grow from this place

One of the things that makes Il Rigo unique is that it does not work like a standard wedding venue with outsourced catering. Food is part of the farmhouse itself, and the official site describes traditional recipes prepared from scratch with organic ingredients grown on the farm.

The same philosophy applies to flowers. Il Rigo explains that it grows seasonal organic flowers, mixed with wild herbs and local foliage, for bouquets and arrangements that genuinely reflect the place and the season. A Slow Flowers Italy feature also describes the work of Luisa and Matthias, their commitment to sustainability, their cut-flower cultivation in the organic garden, and their choice of local, seasonal, lower-impact decoration.

That is something we notice every time we go back: the beauty here never feels constructed. It grows out of the way the place is actually lived.

Imogen and Callum: a sweet English wedding in Tuscany

Imogen and Callum’s wedding had exactly this quality: gentleness. Two very sweet English people, deeply in love, who brought with them their parents and closest friends for a wedding that felt small, sincere, colorful, and full of light.

Luisa’s flowers were beautiful: roses, dahlias, daisies, and cornflowers gathered into a bouquet that felt lively, delicate, and perfect for the bride. Imogen’s dress also carried emotional meaning, because it had been bought by her mother. The lavender bridesmaid dresses and the sage-green details for the men created a palette that felt fresh and beautifully in harmony with the summer landscape of Val d’Orcia.

A ceremony beneath the pines with the Tuscan countryside all around

The ceremony took place beneath the pine trees, in one of the loveliest corners of Il Rigo. The venue’s own wedding page emphasizes that weddings here are meant to feel intimate, relaxed, and deeply connected to the Tuscan countryside.

Here, the ceremony area was decorated with the arch created by Luisa, using leaves, dried flowers, paper elements, and natural materials. Guests sat on wooden benches with cushions in a setting that felt simple, honest, and incredibly beautiful. The ceremony itself was emotional and deeply felt, with the unmistakable tone of English speeches: thoughtful, careful words and strong feeling carried with grace.

Aperitivo in the courtyard and joyful, natural portraits

After the ceremony, the couple greeted their guests during aperitivo in Il Rigo’s inner courtyard, a sheltered and intimate space that works beautifully for relaxed gathering. Cold beer, panzanella, caprese, excellent wine, Pienza cheese, and ricotta from nearby producers gave the whole moment a very real Tuscan identity. Il Rigo’s food is described online as rooted in local, organic, and seasonal ingredients.

Then we went for portraits with them. And this is where our experience at Il Rigo really matters. Knowing the place so well — its timing, light, wind, and strongest corners — allows us to guide couples naturally, without forcing poses, and to create images that feel spontaneous, joyful, and true.

A Tuscan dinner with handcrafted ceramics and garden flowers

When we returned, dinner was ready in one of the most beautiful table settings this place always seems to create. The tables were decorated with handcrafted ceramics made by a friend of Luisa, filled with cosmos, cornflowers, yarrow, broom blossoms, and other flowers gathered from the land and the garden. The colors were vivid, but still deeply natural.

Dinner itself was fully Tuscan, generous, and prepared by Il Rigo’s own kitchen in the spirit of the area’s traditions. The venue’s wedding page repeatedly emphasizes the homemade character of the experience and the fact that recipes are cooked by hand with produce from the farm.

Sunset behind the farmhouse and a celebration full of joy

One of the most beautiful moments of the day was the small celebratory dance at sunset behind the farmhouse. Anyone who knows Il Rigo knows how extraordinary that light can be: warm, open, and incredibly soft.

Dinner ended with a wonderful tiramisu served as many small individual cakes, elegant to look at and perfectly in keeping with the style of the wedding. Then came the dancing: joyful, relaxed, and full of life.

Wedding photographer in Val d’Orcia: why Il Rigo is one of our favorite venues

Il Rigo is truly one of our favorite places to photograph weddings. Not only because of the landscape — which remains among the most beautiful in Tuscany — but because everything here feels coherent: the food, the flowers, the sustainability, the scale, the respect for people’s time. The official site presents it as a place for intimate and sustainable weddings, with a complete service, a natural approach, and a strong relationship with the land.

For couples looking for a wedding photographer in Val d’Orcia, working often in a place like this means truly understanding its rhythm, light, and possibilities. And for us, every return to Il Rigo feels like returning to one of the purest expressions of what a wedding in Tuscany can be.
