A wedding in Ascona between lake, mountains, and Mediterranean light
Some places feel as though they belong to two worlds at once. Ascona, in the Swiss canton of Ticino, has exactly that quality: it is unmistakably Swiss, yet its light, climate, and atmosphere often feel almost Mediterranean. Official tourism sources describe Ascona as a lakeside destination on Lake Maggiore known for its mild climate, palm trees, sunshine, and the striking contrast between the lake and the nearby Alpine peaks.
For us, as wedding photographers usually working in Italy, photographing a wedding here was especially inspiring because of that change in setting: from the warm Tuscan hills to the fresh mountain air of Italian-speaking Switzerland, while still keeping a softness and elegance in the landscape. As a wedding photographer in Ticino, it is one of those places that offers a particularly rich visual story, combining lake views, historic streets, mountain panoramas, and a strong local identity.
Lorenzo and Fabienne: a summer love story that became something lasting
Lorenzo and Fabienne’s wedding carries the charm of a story that began like a summer romance and slowly became something deep and lasting. She is Swiss, from the German-speaking part of the country, sweet, romantic, gentle, and quite shy. He is from Ticino, full of energy, adventurous, a surfer, a traveler, and someone who clearly brings movement and enthusiasm wherever he goes.
That contrast made them especially beautiful to photograph: Fabienne’s poetic softness alongside Lorenzo’s lively, dynamic spirit, surrounded by warm and witty friends who brought a very relaxed and joyful energy to the day.
Art Hotel Riposo: a boutique hotel in the heart of Ascona
At the center of the wedding was Art Hotel Riposo, Lorenzo’s family hotel, which he now helps lead as part of the ongoing family management. On its official site, the hotel presents itself as a boutique hotel in the historic heart of Ascona, just a short walk from the famous piazza and Lake Maggiore, with a romantic atmosphere, panoramic terrace, and strong personal character.
That gave the wedding an especially intimate feeling. It was not simply a beautiful venue chosen for convenience — it was Lorenzo’s world, his home, and part of his identity. Guests stayed in the hotel’s different rooms, each with its own style, which made the preparations feel natural, alive, and full of small shared moments.
Preparations full of style, humor, and personality
Fabienne got ready at the hotel with a look that suited her perfectly: romantic, soft, delicate, and never overstated. Lorenzo, meanwhile, moved through the preparations with the relaxed confidence of someone fully at home, surrounded by close friends who were playful, cheerful, and constantly joking together.
One of the most distinctive details of his personality is his love for vintage cars, which became a visual theme running through the wedding. The historic cars were not just decoration; they were part of the wedding’s real emotional language and a direct reflection of one of Lorenzo’s passions.
A small panoramic church above Ascona
The religious ceremony took place in a small church in the hills above Ascona, in a panoramic setting overlooking the lake and the surrounding mountains. The Ascona-Locarno area is indeed known for its historic churches in elevated, scenic positions where the lake and the Alps meet in a particularly dramatic way.
Guests were brought there in a yellow-and-white vintage bus waiting by the lakeside, while the couple and many friends arrived with their historic cars. It was one of those details that makes a wedding memorable even before the ceremony begins: a joyful procession of beautiful vehicles, perfectly aligned with the couple’s style and the character of the place.
The church was decorated with small white flowers, cornflowers, and blue hydrangeas in a way that felt simple and poetic. Fabienne arrived with her father, and the ceremony itself was deeply emotional and romantic.
Their style told their story
Their looks reflected them beautifully. Fabienne had a gentle, poetic elegance. Lorenzo chose something bolder and full of personality, with a blue-and-orange damask jacket that echoed both the colors of the hotel and his own vivid spirit.
Rather than clashing, these two styles created harmony. They felt like a couple who did not need to match in an obvious way, because their strength came from how naturally two very different personalities fit together.
Informal portraits with vintage cars and real joy
After the ceremony, we created a series of couple portraits with a more spontaneous and informal mood, using their vintage car and some urban corners of Ascona. These were playful, sweet, and very honest images, where their real relationship came through clearly: tenderness, irony, complicity, and freedom.
As a wedding photographer in Ascona, this is one of the pleasures of working in a place like this. Within a very short distance, you move from a hilltop church to the lakeside, from the historic center to terraces with panoramic views, creating a visual rhythm that is very different from Tuscany and equally inspiring.
Aperitivo on the terrace at Art Hotel Riposo
The reception took place on 25 August at Art Hotel Riposo, beginning with aperitivo on the terrace. The hotel’s official materials highlight its panoramic terrace and close relationship with the lake as defining elements of the property.
The mood was festive and bright. Friends had arrived from different parts of Switzerland and Europe, bringing with them an international energy that still felt very warm and personal. The floral decorations were simple and genuine, with flowers gathered from the gardens behind the hotel — a detail that said a lot about the wedding as a whole: elegant, but always grounded in real life.
From the terrace, the view opened across the lake and toward Ascona’s bell tower, creating a naturally beautiful setting.
Dinner at Cortile dei Beati and a family jazz finale
Dinner was held at Cortile dei Beati, the hotel’s restaurant. The official site describes it as a trattoria in the heart of Ascona’s old town, shaped by a love of food, wine, and live music, with an offering that combines Ticino specialties and Mediterranean classics.
This suited Lorenzo and Fabienne’s wedding perfectly, because music and conviviality were clearly part of their world. To close the evening, Lorenzo, his sister, and his father — all longtime jazz musicians — played live for the guests, turning the end of dinner into a joyful and energetic celebration that lasted late into the night.
And perhaps that was the most beautiful part of the wedding: the sense that guests were not just attending an event, but entering a family world full of art, warmth, and life.
Wedding photographer in Ticino for weddings between lake and mountains
This wedding in Ascona, on Lake Maggiore, reminded us how refreshing it is to work in new landscapes and with different traditions and atmospheres. Ticino brings together something truly special: Swiss elegance, the softness of the lake, the presence of the mountains, a nearly Mediterranean light, and a culture that naturally speaks to Italy.
Being a wedding photographer in Ticino, a wedding photographer in Lugano, or a wedding photographer in Ascona means understanding that special identity and turning it into images that tell not only the beauty of the place, but also the truth of the people living their day within it.
