Hannah e Jochem a Il Rigo, Pienza

A summer wedding in Val d’Orcia, with a completely different Il Rigo

Every wedding at Il Rigo has something recognizable, but also something completely unique. That is exactly why we love this place so much. We have been working here for years, returning many times each summer, and we know how dramatically its atmosphere can change from one season to another. The official website presents Il Rigo as an organic farmhouse in the heart of Val d’Orcia, hosting small intimate weddings surrounded by one of Tuscany’s most iconic landscapes.

Anna and Jochem’s wedding carried the full color of summer. Il Rigo was no longer green and soft as it can be in other seasons, but completely transformed: golden harvested fields, yellow earth, hay bales all around, intense sunlight, and a beauty that felt almost cinematic. It was a drier, brighter, more essential version of Val d’Orcia, but no less romantic.

Anna and Jochem: a bilingual wedding in the Tuscan countryside

Anna came from the United States, Jochem from the Netherlands. Their wedding was international and bilingual, shaped by the meeting of families, languages, and different sensibilities. It was especially beautiful to see how everyone responded to the landscape, particularly Anna’s American family, who were visibly struck by the postcard-like beauty of the Tuscan countryside around Il Rigo.

Anna was sweet, shy, and deeply graceful. Her dress was light and poetic, with floral appliqués that moved beautifully in the wind. She wore a small crown of dried flowers and a long braid, giving her look a very bucolic and natural character. Jochem, by contrast, brought a brighter and more playful elegance: a pale blue suit, blue shoes, a bow tie, and a slightly eccentric but very successful look that immediately reflected his humor and charm.

Dried flowers, wheat, and strong summer tones

One of the most beautiful aspects of this wedding was its palette. At Il Rigo, flowers always reflect the season and the place. The venue’s official materials emphasize the use of seasonal flowers grown on site and a natural, sustainable approach to decoration.

Here the tones were fully summer-driven: yellow, gold, dried lavender, wheat stalks, oak leaves, and brighter accents in the bouquets with cosmos and wild fennel, tied with a periwinkle ribbon. The ceremony was framed by large dried floral compositions and natural materials that felt perfectly in harmony with the harvested fields and sun-drenched landscape of Val d’Orcia.

A heartfelt ceremony under the summer sky

As often happens at Il Rigo, the ceremony took place in one of the corners of the garden that offers both shade and a sense of open landscape. Il Rigo is designed for small weddings of up to around 50 guests, and that scale makes every moment feel more intimate and connected.

In this case, the natural setting was already doing so much of the visual work. The dried arrangements, the wheat, the yellow fields, and the midsummer sky created an atmosphere that felt almost painterly. The ceremony was heartfelt and warm, and from that moment onward the tone of the wedding was clear: elegant, welcoming, and deeply shared by both families.

Aperitivo in the courtyard, with shade and organic Tuscan food

After the ceremony, everyone moved into Il Rigo’s inner courtyard to find cool shade. It is one of the most beautiful spaces on the property for aperitivo, intimate and sheltered, especially perfect on very hot days.

This is also where one of Il Rigo’s greatest strengths becomes most visible: the food. The official site is clear that this is not outsourced catering, but an in-house kitchen preparing traditional recipes with organic ingredients from the farm itself.

During aperitivo there was Pienza pecorino, jams and preserves made at Il Rigo, caprese, panzanella, and other dishes deeply rooted in Tuscan summer cooking. Everything had the generous and authentic spirit that makes weddings here feel so special. And already during aperitivo, people began dancing, celebrating, and fully relaxing into the day.

Our eye at Il Rigo: experience, light, and timing

One of the things that matters most at a place like Il Rigo is knowing when to wait. We know this venue extremely well, because we have been photographing weddings here for many years and many times each summer. That is exactly why we know that in full summer the most spectacular light arrives late, with a golden hour that creates truly extraordinary sunsets.

That experience matters. We know the strongest angles, the lines of the landscape, the most harmonious corners, and how to guide a couple naturally without forcing anything. With Anna and Jochem, we moved between portraits with friends, spontaneous moments in the fields and in the shade, and finally the perfect sunset light, when Il Rigo becomes genuinely magical.

Dinner in front of the farmhouse, with sunflowers and emotional speeches

Dinner took place in front of the farmhouse façade, with two beautiful tables and styling that echoed the entire palette of the day. Small sunflowers, dahlias, oak leaves, dried flowers, and the full warmth of summer tones. Everything was simple, but deeply thoughtful, as it always is at Il Rigo.

Il Rigo describes itself as a venue for weddings that are “small, relaxed and homemade,” and that is exactly its strength: elegance here comes from coherence, not excess.

During dinner there were moving speeches from both families, in multiple languages. One of the most beautiful parts of the evening was seeing how naturally everyone had become friends by the end of the day.

Luisa’s cake and a night full of music

The cake, as with everything else, was made at Il Rigo. The venue’s wedding page makes clear that the service is complete and in-house, including food and wedding cake.

This time it was a small three-tier cake decorated with red currants, raspberries, blueberries, and flowers from Luisa’s garden. Elegant, beautiful, and perfectly in tune with the wedding’s character.

Then came live music, dancing late into the night, and a beautiful moon hanging over Val d’Orcia. A perfect ending full of summer, warmth, and joy.

Wedding at Agriturismo Il Rigo: why we keep loving it

Anna and Jochem’s wedding shows another side of Il Rigo: its high-summer face, golden and intense. The colors may change, but the essence does not. What remains is the quality of the hospitality, the beauty of the food, the power of the landscape, and that very special way of hosting small weddings that feel truly memorable.

For couples dreaming of a wedding at Agriturismo Il Rigo, a wedding near Siena, or a farmhouse wedding in Tuscany, Il Rigo remains one of our favorite choices. And returning here so often allows us to tell its story from a place of real familiarity, not only visual appreciation.
